Viral Redux – All The News Fit To Spread

Viral Whistle Blowing

The 41-year-old Lockheed Martin engineer had complained to his bosses. He had told his story to government investigators. He had called congressmen.

But when no one seemed to be stepping up to correct what he saw as critical security flaws in a fleet of refurbished Coast Guard patrol boats, De Kort did just about the only thing left he could think of to get action: He made a video and posted it on YouTube.com.

Unfortunately, it has been redistributed beyond the original intent and modified beyond Starbucks control. Effective immediately, this offer will no longer be valid at any Starbucks locations.

With the Coast Guard deal, I find it interesting that the WP story you link to doesn’t have a link to the actual video. Biggest rule of helping make things “go viral” (even news articles) – make them easy to share, and give them a reason to share. I’d much rather pass on the link to this blog entry if I wanted to share this story with people. You have a link to the story AND a link to the content in question all in one tidy link.

I wonder if the WP did that because they didn’t want to link to something that might get them in leagal trouble, or be seen to endorse something that could become a scandal? i on the other hand have no reputation to protect :-)
